Our Health and Living

Today’s a new day! Long-term and terminal illnesses can be a scary road to navigate. It’s hard on one’s body, mind and soul. And everyone that cares for them. How will my body and mind handle today? That’s a question I ask myself on a daily basis. Chronic and terminal illnesses also raises many questions that many people shy away from unless they are faced with it directly. But if we’re listening, many lessons can be learned.

Health issues have a way of reminding people that time is a valuable, non-negotiable, and a non-renewable resource. With that said, how do we look at the bigger picture of life and find out what is truly important?

Spend Time Focusing on Relationships:

We were not meant to do this life alone. God did not create us to be Lone Rangers. I know of no one who regrets time spent building meaningful relationships regardless of life’s struggles.

Take time to ask yourself the following question: Are you truly making time for your family and friends?

Trim That Fat:

I am not talking about dieting and exercise, but those are important parts of our lives.

No, I am referring to something that a lot of times we do not even notice. I am referring to our home and our lives. We all have a tendency to fill both with clutter and hang on to things we do not need. A life-changing diagnosis can become the catalyst for the housekeeping of our home and heart as we realize what is truly important in our lives. It is also a good time to reflect on our faith.

“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” ~Hebrews 12:1-2

Speak your Heart Now:

It is good for all of us to review and consider our relationships. Because we all know relationships can be messy at times. If we love people, why not let them know how much they mean to us. Now! Why wait until it’s too late? If we have hurt someone or offended them in some way, why not seek their forgiveness and do what we can to make it right.

Who are the most important people in your life? Take a moment to think about that. Maybe even say their names out loud or write them down. Then ask yourself this question: Have I honestly shared what each of those individuals truly mean to me?

“A heart at peace gives rest to the body.”   Proverbs 14:30

Set New Goals (Dream!):

It can be easy to wait for a challenging season to be over. “When I get better, then I will take that trip.” “When I get better, then I will _____.” Why not take that trip now? As I have walked through this long journey of health issues, Laura and I have learned to take those trips now. Even though those trips can be tough on my body, the memories are priceless. So go live out that adventure. Experience love, joy and happiness during even the toughest of times. I encourage you to find what brings you happiness and go experience it. Keep dreaming some big dreams, set some goals, and do what you possibly can to make them happen.

Many facing long term health challenges find that those trials have helped them clarify and simplify their lives.

During my own health journey, I have discovered what’s truly important in life. For me, it’s my faith, my relationship with my bride, relationships with loved ones, encouraging others and truly living out my God-given purpose in life.

What can we learn from this?

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
who comforts us in all our troubles,
so that we can comfort those in any trouble
with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. ~2 Corinthians 1:3-4

I hope and pray the words above have brought some comfort and encouragement. Go live your life! ~OC

People

Today’s a new day! As we continue to walk through this journey called life, people will come in and out of our lives.

People will come into our lives to teach us life lessons

People will come into our lives to inspire us

People will come into our lives to share truth

People will come into our lives for just a season

People will come into our lives to stand with us

People will come into our lives to try and divide us

People will come into our lives to bring us laughter

People will come into our lives to cry with us

People will come into our lives to face tough moments with us

People will come into our lives to teach us to live out our dreams

People will come into our lives to encourage us

People will come into our lives to share hope

People will come into our lives to teach to think outside of our comfort zones

People will come into our lives to help us stand up for what’s right

People will come into our lives to help challenge us

People will come into our lives to be part of our journey.

There is a reason for everyone God brings into our lives. Do not miss out on these beautiful opportunities. ~OC

Prayers Up!

When it gets deep in the night

Where time seems to stand still

I can hear my heart beat and my thoughts screaming and that’s not always a good thing

It’s going to be one of those nights

Where sleep is a distant dream

Sometimes the voices get loud

And the hallucinations seem so real, I have to remind myself they’re not legit, just a short circuit in my brain

But through it all, I stand tall

Not allowing all those voices and thoughts to become real

I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all

I will focus on the prize

Not all the junk, this disease

tries to steal from my mind

I keep fighting, gettin off the canvas

I keep running towards the One who

clears the cobwebs and reminds me

I am His precious child

I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all

I will continue to fight through the

night, all the negative thoughts

that keep me from counting sheep

and getting a good night sleep

I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all

The giants who try to bring me

down at night, are no match for

the One who used a boy named David to bring down one of the biggest

giants of all

I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all

It’s time to be Brave

It’s time to keep Overcoming

It’s time to be Fearless

I am ready to Battle

Refusing to back down

I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all

I am focused on the mission

Not going to backdown

Not going to run away

Going to walk with the King

I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all

As the night slowly creeps on

I will press into the promises

of my King, thankful they get me

through another night, time to be

fearless and pray through it all

I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all

As the night moves on and

My thoughts begin to wonder

the adrenaline starts flowing

and God’s angels get moving

the morning light will soon come shining

So, I will keep standing tall

Lifting up my prayers

to the One who created it all

I will keep fighting, refusing to fall

choosing to embrace faith over it all. ~OC

A Walk Down the 1980’s….

Today’s a new day! As we look at everything going on in the world, I thought back on my wonderful youth of the 1980’s. So many great things came out of the 1980’s, that I could literally write a book on the decade. But I will control myself with this blog post and highlight just a few of the amazing things from the 1980’s. Let’s take a stroll back….

The 1980s were not just years on a calendar; they were a living, breathing entity, a canvas on which an entire generation painted its dreams, fears, and identities.

The Fashion:
Let’s step into a high school hallway during the 80s, and you were met with a dizzying array of fluorescent outfits that would make a rainbow pale. Fashion was bold, brash, and unapologetically loud. Neon colors dominated wardrobes, making statements that were anything but subtle. Teenage girls coupled bright tops with acid-wash jeans, embracing fashion as a form of fearless self-expression. Oh, and big hair. We can never forget the beautiful big hair.

Leg warmers, initially a dancer’s accessory, gyrated their way into mainstream fashion. They were worn over jeans or with miniskirts and accompanied by the ubiquitous jelly shoes. Meanwhile, shoulder pads gave blouses and jackets a distinctive silhouette, empowering wearers with an air of confidence and authority that mirrored the power suits of emerging career women.

Members-only jackets became the uniform of the ‘in-crowd.’ If you wore one, you were part of an unspoken club—a club that valued style, modernity, and a certain coolness that was the currency of high school hallways. Jackets and apparel from brands like Levi’s, Adidas, Ralph Lauren Polo and Nike became symbols of the casual, sporty chic that typified the amazing 80’s.

The Casio digital watches became essential, known for their functionality and iconic style. Their sleek designs and innovative digital displays, often featuring stopwatches and calculators, distinguished them from traditional watches.

Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers have been around since the early 1900s. However, they didn’t become fashion icons until the ’80s. Their simple yet stylish design made them perfect for pairing with jeans, sweats and shorts.

The Tunes:
The music of the 1980s was the lifeblood of teen culture, a constant companion that influenced fashion, language, and identity. It was a decade that witnessed the rise of music as a visual medium, the cementing of pop icons, the battle lines between rock and metal, the emergence of hip-hop into mainstream visibility, and the British New Wave that swept across the Atlantic.

On August 1, 1981, the words “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll” heralded the launch of MTV, a channel that would revolutionize the music industry and the way music was consumed. MTV made the music video a crucial part of an artist’s repertoire, combining song with narrative and visual flair, making stars not only audible but also visually unmissable. Oh, and more big hair.

Music videos became the new art form of the era, providing a platform for artists to extend their creativity and for fans to engage with their idols in a new dimension. Songs from Michael Jackson and Duran Duran were not just hits; they were cultural events that captivated millions with their innovation and storytelling videos.

The Movies:
The 1980s was a transformative era for cinema, evolving the concept of the “blockbuster” and forever changing how stories were told and sold. The 80’s was the decade that solidified high-concept films with wide appeal, massive marketing campaigns, and merchandise tie-ins as a key strategy for Hollywood success.

“Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back,” the sequel to George Lucas’s epic space opera, was more than just a movie; it was an event. With its cliffhanger ending, memorable characters, and expansive universe, it defied expectations and set a new standard for what a sequel could be, driving the franchise into a merchandising juggernaut that encompassed toys, books, and comics.

“Back to the Future” took audiences on a time-traveling adventure with Michael J. Fox’s iconic portrayal of Marty McFly. The film was not just a commercial hit; it became a cultural phenomenon, influencing fashion (who could forget those self-lacing shoes and hoverboards?) and popularizing the science fiction genre among a wide audience.

I will end our 1980’s trip down memory lane here for now. What a great decade. Maybe I will share more about this amazing decade another time. I hope this brought back some fun memories. ~OC

3AM

Some mornings when I wake up early, I feel God using that time in an amazing way. But I have to be honest, some days those early mornings are tough. Today is one of those days. Let me share an early morning with Parkinson’s and dementia.

Today’s a new day! So it’s 3am and my brain is fully awake
I have been up since before 1am, but who’s counting? I am! Some days I wonder how my brain knows it’s 3am or earlier
Some days I wonder if my brain and I are on the same page

Oh, all the voices and noises
It can be a little scary, but I am thankful I haven’t gone a little insane

I think about my 3am folks going through the same, I wish I could reach out and lend each a helping hand

This early morning I look up to the sky
And sometimes wonder why my brain is so different
Some mornings I just want to cry
I wish I could just open my brain and hit the reset button, but that’s just a dream

On these crazy mornings, I wish it was just a phase
But I been running this race for too long for it to just be a phase
But a brother can still dream
Oh, wait a second you have to sleep to have a dream
There will be no more dreaming on this morning

All the voices and noises
It’s crazy, and I am thankful I haven’t gone mad
Thankful the voices don’t call me to danger
I wonder who’s up at 3am and would not freak if I rang them?

So at 3 am I go out on the balcony
And I talk to God, thank goodness He always takes my call
It’s 3am am I look up and pray

On mornings like this, I do not feel like anyone else

I feel like a stranger

It’s 3 am, once again
Talking to God because He always answers when I call
He reminds me that I am not like anyone else
That I am unique and wonderfully made,
That gives me some peace
I bet God gets a lot of calls at 3am
That gives me comfort as I look out over the night sky and I pray. ~OC

Seasons

Today’s a new day! This journey called life is made up of many seasons
some seasons slip away, never to be seen again while other seasons look like they’re slipping away, but they have only just begun

Like the dim light on the road ahead on an evening run, we only get a glimpse of the secrets of the world
May never pass this way again

Noises all around us
the seasons come and go
May never pass this way again

The dreams we dream keep us moving forward in the difficult seasons of life, those dreams keep us flying like an eagle on a warm summer breeze
May never pass this way again

Like Dr. King in the olden days
we must gather all our courage and live out our dreams
May never pass this way again

So cast away your fears
Our dreams will ebb and flow
different seasons will come and go
May never pass this way again

I wanna laugh with family and friends
I wanna cry and not waste a tear
I wanna dream and live in the moment
May never pass this way again

I wanna dance with my bride on a cool summer night to the sounds of the 80’s in the background
I wanna drive down the highway with adventure in my heart and some Motown playing on the radio
May never pass this way again

On those tough days when my body is failing me, I want to look in the mirror and not see a life of washed out dreams, on those days when it’s hard to breathe, I wanna hear Journey in the background reminding me Don’t Stop Believing
May never pass this way again

As the season change, I’m still standing, maybe not better than before, but living as an Overcomer
I wanna keep dancing in the light
May never pass this way again. ~OC

Lessons Learned

Today’s a new day! I have learned a few lessons as I have run this crazy beautiful health journey. I thought I would share a few with you. This journey called life is not easy. It never has been. Embrace the challenges of life and learn from them. Never stop learning. I do not care if you have multiple doctorate degrees, there is always more to learn. Never stop dreaming. I do not care how young or old you are. Keep dreaming! Find your purpose in life. I have learned when you find your purpose you find your peace. And never let anyone or anything steal your peace. Finally, be kind. This is one of the most important lessons we can learn in life. Just being kind can totally change your life and the lives around you. ~OC

Dreams

Today’s a new day! Never give up on your dreams. The crazier the dream, the bigger the blessings. ~OC

Dream Killers

If God has placed a dream on your heart, do not let anyone or anything try to destroy that dream. Dream Killers can be the the following:

Doubt

Criticism

Comparison

Intimidation

Failure/Discouragement

People

These dream killers can happen everyday. Do not allow them to destroy the dreams God has put on your heart. Step out and trust God. ~OC
