Father’s Day

Today is Father’s Day. I want to thank all the fathers out there. You are doing an amazing and incredibly important job. It is not easy the responsibility that has been placed on your shoulders. I am thankful for the father’s who step up to support their children and the children around them. Our communities, churches, country and the world need you.

To all you father figures out there, I say thank you. The countless men who have stepped up and stepped forward throughout the generations to ‘father’ children, I pray that what you give comes back to you in many many other forms pressed down, shaken together and running over. All you stepfathers, grandfathers, godfathers, uncles, guardians, big brothers, teachers, coaches, pastors, foster care dads, mentors, and friends who stepped up and stepped forward and became father figures to children all over the world, I say thank you. You cannot imagine the impact you have had in shaping the lives of men and women all over the world.

Some of you spoke life in one way or the other over the children in your space. Some of you helped to further the education of some. Some of you spoke encouraging words, words of faith and love to some. Some of you built up the confidence of youngsters and enabled them to achieve their potential. Some of you disciplined and straightened up children on the wrong track and thereby saved their lives, their futures, and destinies. Some of you were God’s hand of protection on children when the enemy sought to tear them apart with lies even as their families were torn apart around them. Some of you saved children and youngsters from suicide. Some even did the ultimate and gave up their lives for some children.

I say thank you, truly and honestly from the deepest part of my being.

It is so easy to look the other way, to look within and not out, to prefer not to get entangled in other people’s lives or hard times. Because it is so much easier to choose the freedom of not shouldering any responsibility, even as our thoughts say when I start, they will then keep expecting more from me.

But what if you’re all they have? What if your apathy is the deciding factor in that child living a life of hope and purpose or a life of pain, unhappiness and destruction? What if the impact you make on one child is passed down to multiple generations after you? What if everything we have and are, is ultimately so we can all help each other come up, be better and do better?

I pray that our eyes are opened to the attack on fathers worldwide because that is the only way the enemy can steal the hearts of our children and wreak havoc on the world. The destruction starts with the family. So, let us also begin the rebuilding process with the family.

For those trying their best to be good fathers even in difficult family situations, I ask for strength for you to persevere, and for respite in the difficulty.

For those who had tough childhoods and are now fathers yourselves; I ask for enabling grace for you so you can be the father that you never had to your own children. That you find direction to the right support systems and yield to their wise counsel.

For those who are trying their best to undo mistakes you’ve made and make your way back to your children, I pray that you find empathy from those you left behind, and also the courage to take the necessary steps to become the father you were meant to be.

I see you fathers, I see you father figures, I truly see you. I appreciate you for the love, discipline, and the countless sacrifices, many of which no one will ever know about. Thank you for teaching correction, discipline, good morals, kindness, generosity, strength, teamwork, and all manner of right living.

You are a rare gem and you have made a tremendous difference. It is a sacrifice that’s worth it. I say thank you to all the fathers and father figures. Each of you are God’s hands and feet on earth.

Happy Father’s Day! ~OC

Love, Forgiveness and Grace

Today’s a new day! Attention to all Christians. Before you jump on social media and start posting, ask yourself a few questions before clicking the send button.

1). Is what I am about to post judgmental, gossip, hateful or even true?

2). Is what I am about to post going to unite or divide?

3). Is what I am about to post going to add or delete from someone’s life?

4). Is what I am about to post going drive people closer to God or push them further away?

Our conversations online and in person should be filled with love, respect and words that encourage people. We do not have to agree with people on everything in order to love and respect them. As Christians, we should be inviting everyone to the table. As Christians our friendships should be filled with diversity. As Christians, we should be building bridges; not walls. Remember as Christians, it’s not our job to judge anyone. As Christians, we should be the first ones showing love, forgiveness and grace. ~OC

Confusion and Distractions

Today’s a new day! As we walk through the storms of life, sometimes there is a tendency to think God has abandoned us. The storms of life can be so distracting. The noises of this world can be overwhelming at times. I started thinking about how distractions and confusion are two of the greatest tools of the enemy as he tries to make us believe that maybe God has left us.

When there are big, crashing waves disrupting our lives, it’s very easy to focus on them and feel as if hope and joy have gone. Anything from financial issues to health problems to family drama can be the things that demands our attention in the worst possible way—being louder in our heads and more all-consuming than the truth of God. I am not for a second saying that the storms you might be facing are not overwhelming. That is why they are so distracting. But I do want to encourage each of you to lean in and focus on the promises of God.

The truth of God’s presence is still there, but sometimes it’s really hard to see or hear Him. Sometimes it feels like we are surrounded by those crashing waves and are being pulled under with no hope of being rescued. That can be scary. It’s in those moments that we need to refocus and listen closely for God’s voice. He never stops speaking to us. God never stops standing with us. Even if at times we believe he does. The truth is we give God every reason to leave us, but He never does.

As I sit here this morning, I pray that you will hear the sweetness and the beauty of God’s voice in the middle of whatever storm you might be facing today. ~OC

P.U.S.H.

Today’s a new day! Why do we pray? What are our motives? What would happen if we just spent time in prayer; just for the sake of praying? What if we prayed not just for stuff we want, but instead for God’s purpose for our lives to be revealed? What if we kept praying for the sole purpose of just becoming more like Him? What if we stayed in an attitude of prayer until we clearly heard God’s voice? What if we just P.U.S.H? Pray Until Something Happens. To be more trusting not of our plans; but the plans of God. To become more intimate with God, even during the pain, trials and disappointments of this world. To become more compassionate. The simple act of prayer changes everything. Prayer is personal. Prayer is relational. Prayer makes us stronger. Makes us better. Prayer is trusting God no matter the outcome. That takes faith. Sometimes we have to pray until something happens. That might mean becoming a better listener, humbling ourselves before God and being persistent in our prayers. Prayer is not like a 30 minute sitcom. God wants us to grow in our faith. So never stop praying. Your prayer time might just be the opportunity to experience God in a deeper and more intimate way. So today PUSH. ~OC

Unity!

As I was praying this morning, God gave me the following words. I pray the following words challenge and encourage you.

Let us not be divided, but united, to grow the church into what God would have it be. There is nothing on earth like the local church when it is working properly. It has the power to transform and changes lives. To have eternal significance.

Jesus wants us to live as children of God. He promises to give us the strength and wisdom to face whatever storms come our way. Today, pray for those around you and those far away. Bear in mind that we are to be salt and light to a broken world. Also remember that Jesus is praying for us. Be like the tree of Psalm 1, “…their delight is in the law of the Lord…They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in due season.” ~OC

Hope!

Today’s a new day! Even as I have faced death, I still choose life. Death can never take away the things that truly matter. This journey called life is simply preparing me for eternity. I am living life with an eternal perspective. I try to live my life in a way that people around me will catch that same vision. That vision is life giving. Living out that vision brings hope. Our world desperately needs hope. For me, there is nothing like running towards God and grabbing onto His hope and promises. That hope is available to each of us. ~OC

Come Together

Today’s a new day! God, you created all of us in your beautiful image. Open our hearts and minds to this truth. Help us to recognize that all of us, regardless of skin color are your children. Dear God, help us build bridges of community and hope and not walls of hate and separation. Teach us to love, serve and listen. Open our eyes to the sin of racism. Give us the boldness and courage to stand up against the evil of racism and all hate. Dear God, teach us to celebrate our differences and to see diversity as a strength and not a weakness. Bless us with grace and patience to work together to end racism and hate in our world. Dear God, give each of us the desire to truly live together as brothers and sisters. Amen. ~OC

Me Without You

Running this morning and got caught by the red light. Saw a homeless man staring at me
He was holding a sign that read Need A Little Help and God Bless
A sign of the times

As the light changed and I started running again, I looked back and couldn’t help but think I knew that man
That thought pierced my heart

Later that day on my way home
I noticed another man sitting on the side of the road talking to himself
He looked lost, sad and angry
He was not in a good state of mind
As I drove by, I looked back
I couldn’t help but think I knew that man
That thought pierced my heart

In the middle of the night as I tossed and turned, I thought about those two men, then truth hit me and pierced my heart
I sat up and cried out to God

That could be me without You
Only by the grace of God am I sleeping in a comfortable bed and not under a bridge or wondering around in a lost state of mind
God, I praise you for your blessings and grace

I saw a man on the news
He looked like a regular guy, but his life had taken a different turn, he was going to spend the rest of his days locked away surrounded by prison walls
As the story ended, I couldn’t help but think I knew that man
That thought pierced my heart

All day, I thought about that man from the news and wondered what led him astray
Then it hit me straight in my heart
I looked up to Heaven and cried out to God

That could be me without You
Only by the grace of God am I living in freedom and not locked away in a prison cell
God I praise you for your blessings and grace

As I travel around town and see all the pain and broken dreams, I close my eyes and realize how different my life would be and I look up to Heaven and give praise

Dear God, those could be my stories without you
Thank you for saving me
And praise You for your blessings and grace ~OC

Go!

Today’s a new day! I’ll never forget when God called me to write about and share my crazy beautiful health journey so openly. I thought what do I have to say that people want to hear? There are definitely more qualified people than me. But I truly am living proof that when God calls you to do something He equips you with what you need to carry it out. Those times I do not feel comfortable or qualified, God whispers, “Todd, I do not need you to be nailed to the cross. I’ve already taken care of that. I just need you to go and share the story of how I’ve moved in and changed your life. Can you do that?” As I continue running this crazy beautiful health journey, my current situation is considered critical, but I continue to lean into His loving arms and I trust in God when he says “Go and share my love. Go and serve. As I “Go”, God has never let me down and always shows up with His words, wisdom and strength.

Is there something in your life that God is calling you to do that you have put off because it was too scary, didn’t make sense or you felt like you weren’t qualified? I encourage you to pray and then pray again. Ask God what His purpose is for your life and be ready to accept that calling and Go when He whispers, Not your will, but Mine. Will you trust and follow Him? ~OC

Keep Overcoming

Today’s a new day! I have been running this crazy beautiful health journey for 22 years. On multiple occasions, I have been told I did not have much time left. To get my affairs in order. This health journey has been filled with many twist and turns. But throughout this journey, I have had the peace of God to carry me through. On many occasions, I have asked God what are you up to? But I knew God was in control and had a beautiful plan for my life. I knew something amazing could come out of this journey. I just didn’t know what that was at the time. But I put my trust in God to get me through this and never let fear control my life. The hope I have as a Christian helps me overcome the biggest challenges, along with the amazing support of my family and friends. Also I have a passion for life. A passion to love on, care for and encourage people. That passion is greater than any health battle I could ever face. I have been blessed that the story God has given me has been shared around the world and has encouraged so many people get through their own crazy beautiful journey. Because of the hope I have in the promises of God, a journey that looks hopeless has become a story of hope, encouragement and overcoming. As I continue running this race, I have no regrets for the adversities God has allowed me to run through. If you look at me, you could think, wow, have pity on me for having to endure such a long health battle. But I invite you to look at it as something beautiful. God has taken something negative and turned it into something incredibly amazing. I’m I’m a husband, a friend and a overcomer who God has chosen to life out this incredible adventure. I wake up every morning with joy and purpose and seek to honor God in all I do. Sometimes I fall short, but His grace is sufficient for me. Today, I encourage you to make the choice to overcome the challenges in your life. To live an authentic and unstoppable life through God. If you need someone to run along side you, just reach out to me. Let’s run this beautiful life together. Keep Overcoming! ~OC
